It’s time to start re-evaluating the benefits of adding new oil pipelines in America. As of now the majority of our oil is transported via railways or roads. Over the years the amount of injuries and deaths due to this type of transportation are rising. It was extremely fortunate that after the derailment in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick there were no deaths or injuries. However, over 150 people had to be evacuated from their homes. It was not stated when these individuals would be able to return. The accident appeared to be linked to a problem with the emergency brake, which activated suddenly when the brake failed. This is not the first time incidents like this have happened, and unfortunately most others have ended with severe injuries and deaths.

Last July, a rail accident occurred in Lac Megantic, Quebec, when again the brakes malfunctioned. It caused the train to roll backwards into the town where it exploded. 47 people were killed.

Not only would the production of more oil pipelines create more jobs for Americans, but statistics show that it would decrease the amount of injuries and deaths. Add to that the amount of pollution that these spills are causing, which also in turn leads to health concerns, it really is a win-win situation.

Accidents happen and often times there simply isn’t much we can do to control that. When a solution to a problem which causes people pain and suffering does present itself, I find that it is always wise to take that solution seriously.
