The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is ramping up patrols from 400 law enforcement agencies today in an effort to curb distracted driving.

In Minnesota, distracted driving is to blame for one-fourth of vehicle accidents each year. Between 2008 and 2010, it was the cause of more than 10 percent of vehicle-related deaths in Hennepin County.

Update: according to the Minnesota department of safety nearly 100 people were ticketed as compared to a average day when the number is 4. The Pioneer Press reported:

The 142 agencies that have tallied tickets so far – 250 participated – report that 97 texting citations were issued. Officers also made 2,419 traffic stops.
