As we get the verdict in the trial of Harvey Weinstein, I hope that it gives some solace to survivors of sexual assault. The witnesses that testified are all strong women that found their voice and stood up to extensive cross-examination.
They explained how it wasn’t easy to stand up to the powerful. In doing so I truly hope they got some power back.
One of the questions I was asked most often was “Isn’t he going to get off because he is rich?” With the days of deliberation and talk of a hung jury, that talk increased. And in the end, he wasn’t found guilty of all charges.
But the verdict was a step towards justice. It allows the many who have been silenced and forced to the shadows the opportunity to see the light.
Sexual abuse and the continued silence by the offenders needs to be prevented. If you suffered, saw, or suspected such events, it is important to know that there is help out there.
